How to Resist the Perfect Storm of August Overshopping Triggers
The end of summer can be one of the most challenging times of the year for overshoppers. Three compelling sources: end of summer sales, back-to-school deals, and the new fall fashions all come together at the same time to create the “perfect storm” for compulsive buying chaos.
A few years summers ago, I did a teleseminar with Debbie Roes, who wrote the blog, Recovering Shopaholic: Trade Your Full Closet for a Full Life. On the call, we discussed the three most common mistakes people make as a result of this seasonal pressure and offered many tools, tips, and strategies for successfully handling the strong August pull. It was so well-received that I wanted to share it with you again this August. To listen to that teleseminar click here.
And just yesterday, on her blog Overcoming Overshopping, Toni Marie wrote a post on the Pitfalls of August Shopping.
Here is a third resource, a new program that we have developed at Stopping Overshopping, LLC, that can help you with the August shopping pull.
This new program, The Urge Strikes Guided Self-Help Coaching, includes a powerful in-the-moment tool called The Urge Strikes that you can use, in real time, when the urge to shop or spend strikes and a 45 minute live coaching consult with our Clinical Coordinator, Marcela Torres, LCSW, who will have thoroughly reviewed your material before the consult.
Using The Urge Strikes self-monitoring tool:
-
You’ll investigate and assess the strength of your urge, your mood, your thoughts and feelings, triggers, and potential consequences of your proposed purchase.
-
You’ll identify your authentic needs and think about how you might meet those needs positively, even in a small way, right in the moment, rather than succumbing to a self-defeating overshopping urge.
-
You’ll also be prompted to ask yourself and answer six critical questions that will help you develop the ability to take a pause and make more mindful decisions when the urge strikes.
You’ll have access to this tool 24/7 on your phone, tablet, or your computer for one year. Using this powerful and effective instrument, you’ll be able to monitor your proposed purchase calmly and rationally. It will take just a few minutes, and the time, energy, and money you’ll save by pausing and thinking this through will be well worth it.
