Assignment for Week 5:

1. Read Chapter 5, pages 112-130 in the text.

Chapter 5 begins the process of helping the overshopper understand what he or she is really shopping for, i.e. what are the underlying authentic needs that are fueling the overshopping impulses. Because this is a content rich chapter that provokes a good deal of soul searching, I break it up into two weeks, which is also what we’ll do in the class.  Next next week, you’ll finish the rest of the chapter and we’ll review the rest of the exercises.

3. Here is the quote about wants and needs from Barbara Kingsolver’s “High Tide in Tucson.”

“Want  is a thing that unfurls unbidden like fungus, opening large upon itself, stopless, filling the sky.  But needs, from one day to the next, are few enough to fit in a bucket, with room enough left to rattle like brittlebush in a dry wind.”

4. You asked for a link to an initial group session. I’ve sent you the file through yousendit.com from beckydegrossa, who is my marketing consultant, just in case you didn’t recognize it.

Assignment for Week 6:

1. Read Chapter 5, pages 130-138 in the text.

In this part of Chapter 5, the client/patient takes the Values in Action Signature Strengths survey, after eyeballing the signature strengths and doing a self-assessment. It’s often really interesting to see how close the self-assessment and the computer printout are. The written assignment here is for the client to think through and write about how he/she is going to use each signature strength in the service of stopping overshopping.

Next, the client begins (if they haven’t already done so) a list of Metta tags, basically affirmations, i.e. statements he/she would like to be true that aren’t yet true.  Studies have shown that working with affirmations can have a significantly positive effect on whether these statements actually become true.

Finally, the client is introduced to the Instead of Shopping page in the mini journal.  This is the next part of the Urge Strikes, Heart vs. Head, Instead of Shopping sequence, which I ask them to fill out at least three times during the course of the program.

2. Download the second part of Chapter 5 material for Anita and Barbara

Anita:
a. Daily Weigh 04 05 11

b. Barbara’s Signature Strengths are on pages 43-44of her large journal, which you’ve also already downloaded.
c. Barbara’s metta tags are on page  44 of her mini journal. She did not do any “Instead of Shopping” pages.

Assignment for Week 7:

1. Read Chapters 6 and 7, pages 139-175 in the text.

Chapter 6 is about resisting the pull of the six major shopping magnets and the pull of various sources of social pressure. Chapter 7 introduces the idea of shopping with a plan and reviewing that plan after shopping. Formalizing the “mindful pause” is also covered here, as is a particularly important part of the process, decluttering and/or letting go by returning, reselling, and recycling. Finally, the idea of reinforcing progress by rewarding it is discussed in Chapter 7.

2. Download the Chapter 6 and 7 material for Anita and Barbara

Replay for Week 7:

Assignment for Week 8:

1. Read Chapter 8, pages 176-193

Chapter 8 is about enlisting the body and the heart in the service of stopping overshopping and there are three exercises associated with this chapter.  First, there’s an audiofile of me taking the person through a body scan, after which they do an exercise in the large journal related to what came up from them during the scan.  The second exercise is designed to help someone develop fluency in the nuances of feelings, the idea being that the more specifically one can identify the shade of a feeling, the easier it will become to identify and understand. There’s a much more comprehensive list of emotional shades than I had room to include in the book, so I’ve provided it here, for you to download, if you like.

a. Fuller List of Emotional Shades

The final exercise of Chapter 8 is the dialogue exercise, which is an opportunity for someone to understand the symbolic meaning of an object or an entity, whether it’s money, a credit card, a 48 inch plasma TV, or their business, and the way that the important influences in their lives view that relationship. I’ve found this is one of the most meaningful and interesting exercises in the program.

2. Download the Chapter 8 material for Anita and Barbara

Anita:
a. Body Scan Responses
b. Emotional Shades
c. Dialogue (will add when I get it from Anita)

Barbara:
a. Barbara didn’t do the Body Scan
b. Dialogue with blazers, pages 53-54 in her large journal, which you’ve already downloaded
c. Daily and Weekly Weigh-In pages. 36-36g in mini journal

3. Download

a. Emotional Shades Marie
b. Gail – Frosty – Sno-cone Dialogue

Replay for Week 8:

Assignment for Week 9:

1. Read Chapter 9: Recruiting the Mind and the Soul
This chapter is a crash mini course in cognitive behavior therapy; the overshopper learns to identify and restructure an automatic or dysfunctional thought, work that’s done in the large journal. Then the client completes the Spiritual Needs and Hungers Questionnaire in the text, and formulates a Spiritual Action Plan in the large journal, listens to an audofile of me taking them through a short sitting meditation, and answers follow-up questions in the large journal.  Finally, the client begins to count his or her blessings, first in the large journal and then in a shorter version, they’re copied into the small journal.  I think I must have wanted them to do it twice, because it’s so important to count your blessings!

2. Client material, as per below:

Anita:
a. Dialog with My Business
b. Emotional Shades
c. Motivational Self 4 31 11

Barbara:
a. Read pages 50-55 in her large journal, which has the written exercises from Chapter 9.
b. Read pages 36-36i in her mini journal.  This week, she didn’t complete the Weekly Weigh-In summary page, so we’ll eyeball the data to see how she did.

Gail:
I’ll also have Gail’s dialogue with her ideal mother, father, and brothers to share with you.  Quite different from her first.
