In a culture of materialism where consumption and ownership have been equated with happiness, it is important to focus on the way some people use shopping to deal with feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, depression and trauma. Buy Nothing Day was started by Adbusters Magazine as a way to bring attention to this aspect of the shopping tradition that has grown up around the day after Thanksgiving.
