Shopper’s Addiction Now Almost "Official"

The revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), may be adding a new category: “behavioral addiction.” Behavioral addictions may include addictions to video games, sex, and shopping, and these newly defined additions may impact insurance coverage. Author John R. Ehrenfeld notes this “…is a timely recognition of a deep cultural problem and one that is fundamental to the unsustainable state of today’s world.” When Ehrenfeld compares shopping addiction treatment to the 12-step programs available to other addicts, he finds that shopping addicts live in a culture continually shouting out messages to buy this or that and that they have no safe haven for retreat.
