Materialists, people who attach an excessive amount of importance to physical things, tend to experience more stress from traumatic events. This combined with a generally low self esteem, materialistic people tend to be compulsive shoppers. This conclusion comes out of a study done on two different Israeli towns, one that was under a terrorist attack and one that wasn’t. Study leader Ayalla Ruvio says that the relationship between post-traumatic stress and materialism occurs in a wider context than just potentially life-threatening events, and there is important research to be done regarding the issue.
