Overspending with ADHD

Distraction, Overwhelm, Frustration?

We’ve Got You!

Feel Out of Control?

Approximately 30% of my overshopping clients have been diagnosed with ADHD. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is characterized by symptoms such as inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Some, especially women, have recently been diagnosed in their adult years after struggling with managing their money and other aspects of life. I hear you!

Break the Cycle of Low Self-Esteem

You will break the cycle of shopping, which will boost your self-esteem. Trying to complete tasks, not be distracted, and stay organized can make us feel ‘less than’. With low self-esteem, overspending with ADHD may result in shopping as a coping mechanism. And now, you have a shopping addiction which erodes your self-esteem even more!

Is Tracking Hard?

We will help you organize your finances. You will learn to pre-plan, track, avoid surprises, and manage your credit card bills. We will divide your tasks into bite size pieces.

Do These Apply to You?

While the connection of overspending and ADHD isn’t extensively studied there are potential links that researchers and clinicians have explored:

  1. Impulsivity: You struggle with impulsivity, which can include to impulsive spending- not considering the consequences or adequate planning.
  2. Reward Sensitivity: You may have heightened sensitivity to reward and seek immediate gratification through shopping.
  3. Distractibility: You have difficulty maintaining focus and engage in shopping to alleviate boredom or distract yourself from other tasks or responsibilities.
  4. Self-Regulation: You shop to regulate emotions, or cope with stress, anxiety, or other negative emotions.
  5. Comorbidity with other conditions: ADHD often co-occurs with other mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and impulse control disorders, which can also contribute to overshopping behavior.

Not everyone with ADHD will experience issues with overspending, and not everyone who overspends has ADHD.
