Welcome Sober Sweet Spot Listeners!
Do You Have a Shopping Addiction?
You’ve conquered a tough addiction that was really harmful to you. And now you’re wondering if shopping is your latest problem – as if you haven’t enough to worry about. You are not alone.
Maybe you’ve always shopped, but now you do it more after recovering from your previous addiction. OR, there were some ongoing issues not fully addressed in your addiction program, and now they’re manifested through shopping.
Get Help with Two Powerful Tools
In Dr. Olubunmi Aboaba’s podcast I mention two powerful tools that can help you work toward sober shopping. Here they are, for you.
A behavioral addiction has 2 parts – an addiction to the dopamine high, and a behavioral habit ingrained over time. Use The Motivational Interview at the beginning of every week. Set an intention for the week to break or reduce a small behavior. Keep that goal front and center to become more aware of the subconscious traps you can fall into when you pick up your phone or walk by your favorite store. As you become stronger with meeting the goal, change it or increase it.
This powerful tool helps you track your spending daily. But it is so much more than this. When you write down your spending, your mind starts building financial awareness, and will subconsciously help you resist spending as much. You can reflect on your high spending days – by assessing the events and your feelings. You will begin to notice patterns.
Have you always wanted to do something fabulous with your money? Do you dream of being debt-free, going on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, or buying a home? The WeighIn helps you assess what you needed and what you wanted each week. When you identify how much money goes to “wants”, you now know how much you can redirect to that fabulous goal. Having this top of mind will give you further support in controlling your shopping.
