Motivational speaker Anthony Robbins has identified what he calls “the six human needs,” which may help us better understand shopping addiction. The first three are certainty, variety, and significance. It’s easy to see how someone can use shopping to fill all of these needs. No matter how rocky the rest of your life may be, shopping will always be there, in all of its seemingly infinite variety, to provide stability and chase away boredom. Shopping addicts attribute a special significance to the event, like attention from the sales people, the quest to find the “perfect” outfit or objects that seem to “complete” you, however temporarily.
