Shopping Spree, or Addiction?

A lot of people love to shop. When is a shopping spree a sign of something more serious? Shopping can spiral into a financial disaster and spell family trouble when it becomes an addiction. Ruth Engs, EdD, Professor Applied Health Science at Indiana University reports that no one knows for certain what causes behavioral addictions, but new research suggests that up to 15 percent of people may have a genetic predisposition to addictive behavior which is triggered by certain environments. There’s a lot more specific information about why these addictions continue, because we know about how the brain works to reinforce behaviors that trigger its “feel-good” receptors.
